WHY ALL DOGS SHOULD BE E-COLLAR TRAINED

WHAT IS AN E-COLLAR?

An e-collar - short for electronic collar - looks like a standard strap collar, but with the addition of a small black transmitter box. A hand-held remote is wired to send signals to the dogs’ neck from his owner’s hand, anywhere from a few hundred meters to a mile apart, depending on the model. E-collars, in good hands, are safe. Many people have reasonable concerns regarding electric stimulation. It is nothing like a taser – there is no visible arcing, sparking, or popping. Modern electric collars use the same technology found at many physical therapy clinics; TENS units are used on humans when rehabilitating a weak or cramped muscle.

[A transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator (TENS) sends electrical pulses through the skin to start your body's own pain killers.]

IS IT HUMANE?

Proper e-collar use is entirely humane. The sensation of the e-collar is appropriately set to the dog’s sensitivity so it comes through cleanly and distinctly, alleviating the confusion and anxiety that contribute to misbehavior. Proper use also dictates that the lowest, effective level is used, so the stimulation is minimally uncomfortable and as brief as possible.

Note: abusing any tool can be damaging, and e-collars are no exception, but when correctly used they are safe. Working with a skilled trainer experienced in e-collar communication is vital to avoid any adverse effects or negative associations.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

When sending stimulation (stim), the handler provides the dog with feedback or valuable information about how to act to get a positive outcome. The stim allows the dog to refocus on the trainer and the instruction, as it discourages engaging with distractions and temptations. It enables the dog to adjust its behavior instead of repeating the wrong one. During moments of misconduct, dogs respond to timely, well-calibrated feedback, letting them know to course correct to get a positive outcome.

HOW IS FEEDBACK EXPERIENCED BY THE DOG?

Low levels are barely perceivable and often are described as a “tickle.” Strong, corrective feedback levels will contract the muscle and feel like a firm pinch with an uncomfortable tingle. Still, the stimulation will not physically damage the dog. More robust levels are used for generally sturdier dogs or when the dog is more determined to misbehave. Lower levels are always preferred because it is fairer to the dog and avoids confusion resulting from an overwhelming correction. The dog’s experience of the stim sensation varies depending on how mentally determined and physically engaged the dog is at that moment. The more committed and physically engaged, the less they’ll feel the stimulation; therefore, a higher level is required in such high-drive moments. Imagine yourself playing a game of football, breaking tackles, charging for the endzone, a faint tickle of a feather may not even be perceivable in such a moment, but relaxed in your favorite armchair you could easily feel it. Stimulation can be faint or robust depending on the situation, but we always aim for the lowest effective level.

**E-collars are never used to teach a command but instead used to reinforce existing commands and make them stronger.

10 BENEFITS OF E-COLLAR TRAINING

  1. Enhanced communication: One of the primary benefits of e-collar training is the improved communication between you and your dog. This allows you to give clear and consistent communication, helping your dog understand commands and desired behaviors better.

  2. Efficient training: Another plus of e-collar training is its efficiency. This allows you get faster results, as dogs can quickly associate the stimulus with the desired action, leading to quicker learning.

  3. Distance training: E-collar training allows you to train your dog from a distance, which is particularly useful for off-leash training and ensuring your dog's safety.

  4. Distraction training: This tool allows you to train for very high distracting environments and brake through their prey drive. It is irresponsible and dangerous to take your dog off leash without a way to ensure they will recall 100% no matter what the circumstances.

  5. Reduced aggression: A significant advantage is the ability to reduce aggressive behavior in dogs. E-collar training can effectively correct unwanted behaviors and redirect the dog's focus, leading to a calmer demeanor.

  6. Increased safety: Increased the safety of your dog is one of the most important things you can do as a dog owner. Controlling your dog from a distance despite any distractions can prevent them from encountering dangerous situations, such as traffic or wild animals.

  7. Waterproof technology: Many e-collars come with waterproof features, which is beneficial for dogs fond of swimming or playing in wet conditions. This ensures the collar functions correctly, even in challenging environments.

  8. Customizable stimulation: Having the ability to adjust the level of stimulation for your dog, ensures they receive the appropriate level of correction based on their temperament and learning abilities.

  9. Reduced stress for owners: E-collar training can also reduce stress for dog owners, as it provides a reliable method for correcting unwanted behaviors and reinforcing desired actions, leading to a well-behaved pet.

  10. Positive reinforcement: E-collar training extend to its compatibility with positive reinforcement techniques. Combining these approaches creates a balanced training method that encourages your dog to learn and grow, showcasing the versatility of e-collar training.
